K. Michelle‘s heart is spilling over with emotions, but she isn’t going to let her man see it on the brand new single “Make This Song Cry.”

Inspired by the JAY-Z classic, “Song Cry,” the Memphis native uses the same sample from Bobby Glenn’s “Sounds Like a Love Song,” as she belts out a personal emotional accounting of heartbreak and karma.

“I’ma make this song cry / Never let a ni**a see me cry,” she sings. “For the first time in my life, tried to do something that’s right / I tried to stop thottin’ and be a wife / But I paid the ultimate price.”

Taking to Instagram to gush over her new album K wrote: “My new album @thepeopleiusedtoknow is really amazing. It took long enough huh? While you wait rock 2 my new single.”

K. Michelle has previously shared her fandom for Shawn Carter. This past June, she celebrated the release of his new album 4:44 with gratitude. “Thank God the heavens heard our cry,” she tweeted. “We get to listen to some REAL RAP LYRICS. Good music do something to me.”

“Make This Song Cry” is her latest single off The People I Used to Know, following “Birthday” and the Chris Brown-assisted “Either Way.”
