On Tuesday night (April 5), BET aired the 10th annual “Black Girls Rock! Awards,” which was filmed on Friday, April 1 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Hosted by actress Tracee Ellis Ross, the star-packed evening featured special tributes and celebrated honorees including, Rihanna (Rock Star Award), legendary singer Gladys Knight, writer-producer Shonda Rhimes, actress and playwright Danai Gurira, young actress and activist Amanda Stenberg, plus Black Lives Matter founders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi.

The special evening also brought out many of R&B’s best, including performers Jazmine Sullivan, Brandy, Monica, Marsha Ambrosius, Andra Day, Corrine Bailey Rae, and even Lauryn Hill, who closed out the show with a surprise set.

Jazmine delivered another outstanding performance, as usual, of her Reality Show single “Masterpiece,” while backed up by singers, dancers and musicians of varying size. Brandy brought her much praised new song “Beggin & Pleadin” to life on stage with a roaring theatrical performance. Monica brought it home with an angelic performance of her glorious ballad, “Alone In Your Heart.”

Check out some of the performances, and Rihanna’s humble acceptance speech below.
