With all her recent success, Kehlani returned to the Bay this past week to celebrate with fans back home, as well as get personal in an in-depth interview with 106KMEL’s Shay Diddy. The two talked about Kehlani’s acclaimed new mixtape, ‘You Should Be Here,’ as well as who she wants to write for, and her thoughts on being called the “female Drake.”

Like many critically acclaimed projects, Kehlani’s “YSBH” was inspired by her personal life in the past year, which included both heartbreak and finding a new love. She explained to Shay how the mixtape title initially came about, as well as what specific situations led to songs like “Jealous,” “How That Taste,” and the heartfelt track to her mother, “The Letter.”

Kehlani also revealed to Shay that fellow Oakland native, Keyshia Cole, was supposed to have made a guest feature on the track “N—as,” but bad timing and schedule conflicts prevented the collaboration from fully forming. Though this didn’t have a chance to come to fruition, Kehlani is also hoping for a chance to work with R&B superstar, Chris Brown, and write for him soon.

In addition to her lengthy interview Kehlani performed her new song “The Way.”
