HBO continues to bless us with amazing original programming. The network has unveiled the first trailer for their anticipated new film “BESSIE,” starring Queen Latifah as the late, great blues singer Bessie Smith.
Nicknamed The Empress of the Blues, Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She passed away in 1937 from a fatal car accident. Smith has three recordings in the Grammy Hall of Fame, including “St. Louis Blues,” “Empty Bed Blues,” and “Downhearted Blues,” which is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock ‘n’ roll music.
The upcoming biopic is set to premiere on Saturday, May 16, and also stars Michael K. Williams, Tika Sumpter, Monique, Kandi Alexandar, Mike Epps, Charles S. Dutton, Tory Kittles, Oliver Platt, and Bryan Greenberg.
