What a year it’s been for R&B. As we began reflecting on all of 2012′s releases, we were reminded that, not only was this a huge year for the amount of R&B releases, but the genre is making a major comeback. In between the various styles and branches R&B has extended, there are multiple realms and sub-genres beginning to thrive. Within it’s own progression into Pop, or the music critics new favorite – Alt-R&B or Alt-Soul, there is an exciting, rising new class, who are bringing classic soul stylings and organically incorporating their own honest youth, and contemporary perspective.

This year was filled with comebacks from some R&B legends, and a few of it’s popular stars who were looking to make up for less than stellar previous releases. There were newcomers making very impressive debuts, and some outstanding sophomore releases. It’s always a labor of love making these lists, but after much debate and discussion, we are confident in the result. As 2012 comes to a close we love to reflect on all the great music that was released this year. Although there are mixed opinions on if R&B is still a strong genre, one thing is for sure, there was a lot of great R&B music released this year, from many artists helping to keep the genre alive. Black Girls Rock! 2012 Performances

BET returned with their accredited “Black Girls Rock!” award show and concert on Sunday night. The birthchild of Beverly Bond which highlights and honors African American woman in entertainment, business and community. This years event, taped on October 13, was held at New York City’s Loews Paradise Theatre, and was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King. The nights entertainment included performances from many of R&B’s leading ladies, Alicia Keys, Brandy, Keyshia Cole, Ciara with Missy Elliot, SWV, India Arie and even some fellas this year, Eric Benet, Anthony Hamilton and newcomer Luke James.

SWV Signs New Management Deal

One of the favorite R&B trios of the 90′s SWV recently joined MBK Entertainment, the management firm run by Jeff Robinson, former manager of Alicia Keys. After a 15 year hiatus, SWV currently has a new album in stores now ‘I Missed Us’ which many call one of the top R&B albums to come out this year. MBK Entertainment also represents R&B singers K. MichelleElle Varner and Tyrese.

The 2012 ESSENCE Music Festival is in full swing, one of R&B and Soul Music’s biggest events each year, and it has already proven to be one of the most exciting and brightest showings. With the main concert kicking off this past Friday night featuring performances from Trey Songz, Keyshia Cole, the much-anticipated set by D’Angelo and Charlie Wilson, ESSENCE described and accounted the show’s opening night live from the Superdome in New Orleans. NEW MUSIC: SWV – ALL ABOUT YOU

With the release of their comeback album I Missed Us just around the corner, SWV have released the follow-up to lead song “Co-Sign.” The second single to be lifted from the album is “All About You,” another ’90′s R&B styled tune, with Hip-Hop inspirations and a screamin’ hypeman sounding like Fatman Scoop.

The Sisters With Voices are in a positive mood on the midtempo party joint, singing their love for a special someone. Take a listen to the new song below … I Missed Us will hit stores and online on April 17.
