Go Behind The Scenes with SWV at B.B. Kings in NYC

This past Friday, hitmaking R&B group SWV released their fifth studio album Still.

Coko, Lelee, and Taj have graced stages across the country in promotion of their new record and to say the least, these women know how to put on a memorable experience. I had the honor of going behind the scenes during their set in their old stomping grounds of NYC, just a couple of weeks prior to the album’s release.

A jammed packed house at B.B. Kings Blues Club, hundreds of fans anticipated this moment with the legendary trio. Prior to the ladies hitting the stage we caught up in their dressing room to discuss the current state of R&B music, specifically on the female side. In addition they told me who their man crushes were back in the ’90s.

Take a look at their live performance and exclusive interview below.

Holiday Jam

This holiday season will be extra merry as R&B/Soul heavyweights, Jill Scott, Babyface, New Edition, Tyrese and more are set to perform in the second annual Holiday Jam Concert Series. They will be spreading cheer through four cities: Philly, D.C., Detroit and Hampton, VA., with some added spice from SWV, Jazmine Sullivan, and the Black Alley Band.

As of now, the tour kicks off on November 28 in Philly and closes out on December 12 in Detroit.

The tour was developed by Shawn Gee of Maverick Management and Geoff Gordon from Live Nation as a way to highlight and renew interest in the R&B genre. According to Gee: “We noticed the success and phenomenal growth of multi-act radio concerts platforms over the last decade. The concept works so well in the pop and hip-hop genres; we are certain it will be successful in the R&B space as well.” He continued, “The vision is to continue to grow the platform, expanding to 12-15 markets, creating a platform that showcases the R&B superstar, while at the same time gives much needed exposure to some of the emerging acts in the space.”

Throwback Tuesday: SWV – ‘I’m So Into You’

‘Sisters With Voices,’ better known as SWV, is a Grammy nominated R&B trio from New York City. Formed in 1990 as a gospel group, the ladies (Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, and Tamara “Taj” Johnson), went on to become one of the most successful R&B acts of the ’90s, dominating the decade with their incredible three-part harmonies.

SWV was also a major part of both the New Jill Swing and Hip Hop Soul movements. “I’m So into You,” was the second single released off their triple platinum debut album, It’s About Time. The single peaked at No. 2 on the R&B chart and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single alone went on to sell more than one million copies.

Enjoy the throwback above! After the jump check out SWV performing “I’m So Into You” & “Weak” on the Arsenio Hall Show.
