Watch: Noisey Presents: ‘Under the Influence – 90s R&B Still Reigns Supreme in 2017’

Noisey Under the Influence 90s R&B

Black history is American history, especially when it comes to music. African-American musical traditions set in motion a culture that’s given us Jazz, the Blues, Rock n Roll, Funk, Disco, Soul, and Hip Hop.

Despite this evolution, for much of the 20th Century “Rhythm & Blues” was a blanket term applied to any music marketed to black audiences, changing meaning with each era. As Hip Hop entered the picture artists like Teddy Riley, Jodeci, and members of New Edition incorporated the new sound and style into a classic R&B template. Since then, the line between the two would continue to blur, influencing pop music forever.

Noisey’s “Under The Influence” shows how New Jack Swing married Hip Hop and classic R&B to give birth to something entirely new for the 90s, paving the way for today’s artists like Kehlani, Ty Dolla $ign, Dreezy, and Phantogram, while helping to make millions of babies along the way.

Watch the progression of New Jack Swing from the late ’80s to 2017 below.

New Music: Bell Biv DeVoe feat. SWV – Finally

The ultimate ’90s collabo has finally happened! Bell Biv DeVoe have released their latest single “Finally” and it features fellow ’90s R&B icons, SWV.  Opposite of their Biggie inspired single, “Run,” “Finally” is a sweet ballad about finding love that lasts. Reminiscent of the ’90s with a 2017 twist, old and new school fans will dig this feel good groove.

Ricky and Coco pledge devotion to each other as he sings to her, “You give me everything so I’mma give you more … when you Finally get it right …that’s how it feels when I’m with you.” She responds with her signature lilt, “You are so secure and I mean that / Some reciprocation is all that I’ve been missing / I’ve found myself in you … I’d be proud to say  ‘I do…”

This is definitely a dope marketing move by both groups as they are currently on tour together. The New Edition three-day biopic is set to start airing on BET January 24 and BBD’s first album in 15 years Three Stripes, is due out on January 27.  SWV was profiled on the season premiere of TV One’s “Unsung” this past Wednesday (Jan. 4).

“Finally” is available on iTunes now. Stream it below via Spotify.

TV One returned with their popular show “Unsung” on Wednesday night (Jan. 4). The season premiere of the award-winning documentary series told the story of famed ’90s R&B girl group SWV.

The trio–made up of Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, and Tamara “Taj” Johnson–formed in 1990 in New York City. The group had a series of big hits in the early ’90s, including “Weak,” “Right Here/Human Nature,” “I’m So into You,” and “You’re the One.” SWV disbanded in 1998 to pursue solo projects, but reunited in 2005. Go Behind The Scenes with SWV at B.B. Kings in NYC

SWV-BB-Kings

This past Friday, hitmaking R&B group SWV released their fifth studio album Still.

Coko, Lelee, and Taj have graced stages across the country in promotion of their new record and to say the least, these women know how to put on a memorable experience. I had the honor of going behind the scenes during their set in their old stomping grounds of NYC, just a couple of weeks prior to the album’s release.

A jammed packed house at B.B. Kings Blues Club, hundreds of fans anticipated this moment with the legendary trio. Prior to the ladies hitting the stage we caught up in their dressing room to discuss the current state of R&B music, specifically on the female side. In addition they told me who their man crushes were back in the ’90s.

Take a look at their live performance and exclusive interview below.
