PressPlay: 25 R&B Videos To Kick Off Summer

R&B Videos Summer

Summer is here and in case you were wondering, I’m just as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. Though each season holds its own weight in my book, there’s just something about summer that can make anyone feel their best and want to shine every chance they can. While everyone has their different reasons for feeling so good when summer creeps around, we here at ThisIsRnB will always give some of the credit to our playlist of summer R&B songs for that overwhelming emotion that the season brings out of us.

Although today’s R&B artists can still deliver a solid feel good sound for summer (i.e. DJ Khaled’s Rihanna and Bryson Tiller-assisted “Wild Thoughts“), there’s no denying that the majority of the top summer vibes came from the ’90s and early 2000s. Likewise, those same artists were all about making videos to match that same vibe and as a result, turned each summer into the biggest party that we would experience all year-long. So as an ode to those tracks and inspiration to make the next few months the best of your year, we decided to set you up with a dope list of R&B videos that are sure to set your summer off proper.

Excited about letting the top back, pulling out the shawt shawts, and getting tipsy on the rooftop? Jump into these 25 nostalgic summer videos to hype you up for your first day out (no Gucci) this season.

‘SOULQUARIUS’ Brings R&B Greats, Past & Present, to West Coast Fans!

When the flyer for the inaugural SOULQUARIUS Festival in Santa Ana, California dropped in late 2016, R&B lovers everywhere went crazy over the line-up of scheduled performers.  From throwback artists like Jon B. and DMX to current R&B tastemakers such as Ro James, Jhené Aiko, and BJ The Chicago Kid, there was no denying that this event was guaranteed to be a lituation.

Fear of getting rained out and continuous flooding from California’s big storm may have had most on edge but, that didn’t stop ticket holders from coming out in droves to get a taste of what their favorite performers have to offer. Of course, there were a few mishaps along the way (like any huge festival has during their opening year), but SOULQUARIUS — aside from its massive lineup — has plenty of reasons why it should be the R&B festival that you don’t want to miss from here on out.

Delivering a jammed packed mash-up of lovable R&B artists and a few of rap’s most influential, SOULQUARIUS made sure to leave festival enthusiasts with a need to get their coins up for next year.

Mya has blessed us with a new video!

The Grammy nominated singer celebrates both Valentine’s Day and the 1-year anniversary of her critically acclaimed 2016 album Smoove Jones, with the release of the visuals for her sexy song “Coolin’.”

Filmed on a sandy beach in Sydney, Australia, the video takes us on a trip down memory lane as Mya fantasizes about the man she misses in her life. Fleeting images of memories the two share together relaxing on the beach are intertwined with beauty shots of the veteran songstress lounging around her house in beautiful lingerie.

“Your love’s like summer time / Yeah, it feels like it can’t get any hotter / Kiss me like cherry wine,” Mya sings seductively to her boo. “Yeah, it feels like it can’t get any sweeter / So don’t stop rocking me like you do it / Boy, I love the way that we do it / Coolin’ (coolin’)/ Yeah, we coolin’ (coolin’)”

25 R&B Dancehall & Reggae Fusion Songs To Turn You On

25-R&B-Dancehall-Songs

Over the last few years, the influence of dancehall music in other genres has been extremely prevalent. Though genres have been pulling from other sounds not like their own for further back than we can remember, reggae, dancehall, soca, and its accompanying sounds from the Caribbean, have been some of the most replicated.

Originating in the late ’70s, dancehall music grew to new lengths in the early ’90s with sounds provided by Shabba Ranks, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Mad Cobra, and more. Uncovering massive US crossover success, the sound only provided a demand for more music like it. Thus, the late ’90s and early ’00s saw an even larger breakthrough in the US market than before, solidifying dancehall as a top contender in mainstream crossover music. While Caribbean-based artists were taking advantage of crossing over into our market, Pop, Rap, and R&B artists were also taking advantage of the addictive sound penetrating our ears. Artists like No Doubt,  Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, Twista, Busta Rhymes, Sean Kingston, and more pulled the sounds of dancehall and fused it with their own, subsequently making them fall in the reggae fusion genre.

With the recent success of Drake’s “Controlla” and the Tory Lanez new single “LUV,” the love and admiration of the dancehall and reggae fusion sound continues to make its impact on current day music. While many will pose the question on whether or not dancehall is becoming mainstream again thanks to native artists like Popcaan, Konshens, Vybz Kartel, and Kranium, and non-natives such as the formerly mentioned, I give the firm answer that dancehall has never left.

With a sound that delivers longevity, appreciation, and respect, dancehall and reggae fusion songs will always be present due to their ability to stay relevant long after their debut into what we consider as “mainstream.”

Whether you’ve been a fan of the sound or are just joining in on the wave due to a few tracks that have recently surfaced, this list of “25 R&B Dancehall & Reggae Fusion Songs To Turn You On” will help you remember why dancehall and reggae fusion are two of the most influential sounds around.

21 R&B Videos from the 2000s To Get You Ready for Spring Love!

21-R&B-Videos-Spring-Love

Ah, spring! The season where the weather is nice, the flowers start to bloom, and R&B songs reign supreme!

As the weather finally went from drab to fab in the blink of an eye, I couldn’t help but play one of my favorite songs dedicated to the spring: Stevie B’s 1988 hit-single “Spring Love”.  Now, in the midst of me bobbin’ my head while the wind blew through and hit my bad hair day chia pet hair, I realized that this is the season that is the precursor to the official choose up season (word to Eric B.). It is in the spring that you engage in the drafting to the choose up season…if you will. It is with spring that you start laying down the good talk game to secure your spot for the playoff season if you’re in the market to be traded or do the trading.

Of course though, we all know that R&B is literally the genre of love (and heartache, but we’ll save that for another list), so it was only right that we delivered a list of R&B songs/videos from the 2000s to get you ready for spring love! What better way to let the one you’re checkin’ for know that they’ve caught your eye then to play them a track from one of the best eras (I’m not here to let you debate me, so don’t try) of music ever made?

Jump into our list of “21 R&B Videos from The 2000’s to Get You Ready for Spring Love” below!

New Music: Mya – Afta Glow Show

MYA-outro

Mya hopes you’re ready to tune into Smoove Jones radio this Valentine’s Day as she plays a radio host on her new song “Afta Glow Show.”

Her newest independent album, Smoove Jones will be released on February 14, the 18th anniversary of her very first single “It’s All About Me,” which came out on Valentine’s Day 1998. “Afta Glow Show” serves as the outro for what sounds like a project made for lovers that will be super sexy and filled with slow-jams.

On the new track, Mya sets the mood singing, “I don’t know what’s just come over me / But suddenly, I’ve got the urge to feel your body soaking wet right next to me.”

Smoove Jones has already been preceded by two buzz singles “Team You” and “Welcome to My World,” and is entirely produced by Mya herself.  This will be the singer’s twelfth project, and eighth independent release.

R&B songstress Mya is back with a new on for us to vibe to. Releasing her new single, “Welcome To My World,” the veteran singer sings about bringing her new man into her world.

Singing out, “So you trine get to know me? / Gotta take it slow, be easy / I’ma need you to talk to me, walk with me, until we find the flow,” Mya brings forth a sound that is reminiscent to the reasons we feel in love with her sweet sounding vocals over 15 years ago.
