Mary J. Blige Celebrates 25th Anniversary of ‘What’s the 411?’

Mary J. Blige released her iconic debut studio album, What’s the 411?, twenty-five years ago.

On Friday (July 28), the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul shared a message to fans while celebrating the anniversary of the game-changing album and reflecting on her storied career.

“Wow!!!! 25 years ago when I walked into this business I had no idea what was going to happen. I just know I wanted to sing,” she wrote on Instagram. “Deep in my heart I knew I wanted to touch the lives of women and people. I’ve done that 25 years later and I’m still doing that by the grace and mercy of God on a level I never even imagined.”

Continuing her thoughts on the album, Mary also revealed how proud she is of continuing her work today. “Still relevant and strong in what I do and I’m so grateful for all the people who came into my life and stayed for the hard times, celebrations, humiliations and triumphs,” she added. “I got love for you beyond what you can feel. To my family who loves me no matter what and to my fans that heard my call, heard my cry, saw me fall, saw me get back up, saw my strength, pray for me and fight for me. For that I LOVE you so deep. By the GRACE and MERCY of God I still REIGN as QUEEN and I’m so grateful because now I know what that means.”

The songstress released her 13th studio album, Strength of a Woman, in April. It debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart.

What’s the 411? charted as high as No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell more than 3 million copies.

Watch: Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Ari Lennox, Jazmine Sullivan & Lalah Hathaway Had A Sing-Off at ESSENCE Fest

When it was announced that Mary J. Blige would be curating the first ever “Ladies Night” concert evening at this year’s ESSENCE Festival, it was inevitable that audience members would be witnessing some of the best female voices in music.

Gathering together an amazing line-up of SANGERS for the special Saturday night show at the Superdome in New Orleans, attendees were not only blessed with outstanding solo performances, but a special surprise sing-off!

During Chaka Khan’s solo set on the main stage, the R&B icon treated the crowd to one of the most memorable moments of the weekend. While performing the final song in her set, “I’m Every Woman” — and as the crowd sang along — Jazmine Sullivan walked out joining Khan on stage.

The Superdome cheered, but they weren’t even prepared for what would happen next. Jazmine helped on the second verse, but then Mary J. Blige, Lalah Hathaway, and Ari Lennox walked out for the chorus!

After singing together, Khan encouraged each woman to offer a solo. Hathaway and Sullivan did classic jazz scats, Lennox sang a beautiful melody, and Blige belted out some soulful vocal runs.

Mary J. Blige BET Awards

If any younger viewers doubted it, or weren’t in the know, Mary J. Blige showed off why she’s still the Queen of Hip Hop Soul on Sunday night at the 2017 BET Award.

The R&B legend brought her emotional new album, Strength of a Woman to the stage with a medley performance that everyone should be talking about.

Kicking off her set with “Set Me Free,” Mary launched into the song that was likely written with her estranged husband Kendu Isaacs in mind. “There’s a special place in hell for you,” she sang. “You gon’ pay for what you did to me.”

But soon, the horns came out and her attitude shifted to self-love on “Love Yourself (Remix).” Joined by A$AP Rocky, a group of musicians, and Black Panther-inspired men, Mary explained the importance of loving oneself through turmoil.

While everyone has their different reasons for feeling so good when summer creeps around, we here at ThisIsRnB will always give some of the credit to our playlist of summer R&B songs for that overwhelming emotion that the season brings out of us.

Although today’s R&B artists can still deliver a solid feel good sound for summer (i.e. DJ Khaled’s Rihanna and Bryson Tiller-assisted “Wild Thoughts“), there’s no denying that the majority of the top summer vibes came from the ’90s and early 2000s. New Video: Mary J. Blige feat. A$AP Rocky – Love Yourself

Mary J. Blige brings her compelling song “Love Yourself” to our screens with a stunning visual for the A$AP Rocky remix.

The Queen brings vintage New York to the set in diverse scenes. She opens in a dimly lit apartment sipping a drink in an armchair, and then appears in a glamorous gown while singing in front of a piano player under a large chandelier. Later, MJB shows off her gangster side rocking a red fur while singing from an old-school Lincoln Continental with suicide doors, as bodyguards stand around.

Adding his own diverse perspectives for his appearance, A$AP Rocky shows off 3 different personas of himself. Two Flacko’s split rhymes back-and-forth in a room in a casual wear, before a dapper Rocky joins Mary to finish his verse.

This version of “Love Yourself” is a remix to the Kanye West-assisted original, which appears on Mary’s Strength of a Woman. It follows videos for “Thick of It” and the title track.

Blige will be performing at select shows and festivals in Europe before headlining the ESSENCE Festival on July 1, and kicking off her “Strength of a Woman Tour” July 3 in Atlantic City.
