The upcoming film ‘Black Nativity’ continues to build on it’s star-studded cast, which now includes the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. The R&B icon recently shot some scenes for the movie, which has been filming in NYC. MJB will play the character of an angel named ‘Platinum Fro,’ and she joins the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese, and even newcomer Luke James and Jacob Latimore.

The movie which is expected out in 2014 is the film adaptation of Langston Hughes’ gospel musical re-telling of the Bible’s nativity story. The show was originally performed Off-Broadway in 1961. The movie version follows Langston (Jacob Latimore), a street-wise teen from Baltimore raised by a single mother, as he journeys to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives Reverend Cornell and Aretha Cobbs (Whitaker & Bassett). Unwilling to live by the imposing Reverend’s rules, a frustrated Langston is determined to return home to his mother, Naima (Jennifer Hudson). Langston embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey and along with new friends, and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing, and family.

The film will feature original lyrics and arrangements from Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer Raphael Saadiq.

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Miss Mary J. Blige, was awarded the VIBE ‘Impact Award’ at their 20th Year Anniversary celebration in West Hollywood on Friday night. The stars and many of her closest industry friends came out to honor the R&B icon, and offer some kind words while on the red carpet, including Diddy, Babyface, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and more.

“It feels great to get the Impact of the Year award. It feels amazing,” said MJB as she made her entrance.

Mary J. Blige Attends ‘Betty & Coretta’ Premiere, Visits ’106 & Park’

Mary J. Blige was back on the red carpet Monday night. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, along with her castmates, celebrated the premiere of the Lifetime original movie “Betty & Coretta.” Looking beautiful in a classy white dress, she posed with her co-stars Angela Bassett and Ruby Dee.

Mary plays Dr. Betty Shabazz, civil rights advocate and the wife of Malcolm X, while Bassett portrays Coretta Scott King in the film, which she is also the executive producer. She also stopped by “106 & Park” to promote the movie and speak about her starring role. “It was challenging. Being No. 1 is a lot of work,” said Mary. “I had to try to [portray] this woman, who was already living and already very important. I couldn’t fail her. I had to give her everything. But it was hard.”

In addition to the new film, Mary is working on new music with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox.  See “Betty & Coretta” when it premieres February 2 at 8 PM on Lifetime.

Behind The Scenes: Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett Star in ‘Betty & Coretta’

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige will be starring in the Lifetime movie Betty & Coretta with actress Angela Bassett. This film will illustrate the friendship between Malcolm X’s wife Betty Shabazz and Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife Coretta Scott King. Betty and Coretta formed their bond during the civil rights movement, and after both of their husbands were assassinated they continued fighting for the causes that their husbands died for. Check out a clip from the movie below…

Mary J. Blige To Play Dr. Betty Shabazz On ‘Coretta & Betty’

Mary J. Blige will soon be returning to television screens alongside Angela Bassett. The “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul” hit the screens last year in Rock Of Ages and now she is tackling a more serious role. Mary will be playing the role of Dr. Betty Shabazz, wife of civil rights leader Malcolm X and a civil right leader all in her own right.

The movie will air on Saturday, February 2, at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.


Mary J. Blige Performs “The Living Proof” on Hurricane Sandy Relief Fundraiser

Mary J. Blige joined the star-studded Hurricane Sandy relief fundraiser Friday night on NBC. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul delivered a stirring and emotional performance of her empowering song “The Living Proof.”

Mary shared a hopeful message to viewers before beginning, “My prayers go out to everyone who was affected by the hurricane,” she said. “Things are gonna get better, so please just hang in there, be strong, and have faith. And please everybody watching tonight, give something, anything. Every penny counts.”

Along with Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Sting and Bruce Springsteen, the stars helped raise millions for relief efforts. You can help too by donating to the Red Cross. Watch MJB’s performance below.
