Mario Talks Going Independent, Finding Love, & New Album ‘Paradise Cove’

Mario stopped by Hot 97 again recently, this time for a candid conversation with Nessa. The R&B vocalist opened up about his new music, going independent with his own label (New Citizen), finding love, and what we can expect from his upcoming album, Paradise Cove.

In regards to forging his own path now, and being an indie artist, Mario explained: “You gotta spend money to make money. I think overall I’ve learned so much and made enough mistakes to use them as references going forward.”

As his love life goes, he had settled down with someone, but after that experience didn’t work out he has decided to date “freely.”

“Sometimes I like to just go out and have a good time. I’m not ready to settle down just yet. Not right now.”

Mario recently released the single “I Need More,” the first song lifted off Paradise Cove, which is due out later this year.

Mario Talks Upcoming New Album ‘Paradise Cove’

Last week, Mario surprised us with his comeback single “I Need More,” and the announcement of his fifth album, Paradise Cove.

While in NYC promoting the new single, the R&B crooner stopped by Fuse TV for an interview where he revealed some intriguing details about the forthcoming album, which he described as “dark and sexy.”

The “Let Me Love You” singer has gone is various musical directions throughout his career, and his latest single features another unexpected sound as well, which touches on R&B’s influence from the trap sound.

According to Mario he is enjoying the mixed response from fans.

“A lot of the album is not that aggressive. There are songs that are more R&B-driven, but [for] the first single I wanted to do something that was fun, abstract, R&B/hip-hop type of record. That’s why I chose ‘I Need More,'” he explained. “I’m getting the reaction that I wanted: Some people are like, ‘That’s different, I don’t know…’ and they hit me two days later like, ‘Yo! I love it!’ And some people love it straight up top. I wanted to shock people and get that shock value.”

During the interview, Mario also revealed that he’s working on a music video to accompany the single that will showcase an unexpected side of himself.

Listen: Mario Returns With New Single “I Need More”

Mario I Need More

Mario we need more too!

After releasing the Rick Ross-assisted song “Forever” last year, and then sharing the title and cover for his forthcoming album Never 2 Late, we’ve been expecting more from R&B singer Mario.

Now, after teasing the song all week, the Baltimore native returns with his brand new single “I Need More,” and reveals a new album is on the way instead.

Over hard-hitting production, Mario sings about “f*cking up some commas” and needing “more than these bottles.” The trap style single is edgy and perhaps a sign of what’s to come on his forthcoming independent LP, Paradise Cove.

The album marks a new stage in Mario’s career, one that he feels is providing more freedom in his music. “I found myself having to face my own darkness in order to step into the next phase of my purpose,” he said. “It inspired certain sounds and textures that you wouldn’t get from a label-produced Mario album.

“We were able to create a concept, lyrically and sonically, that expresses exactly what I was feeling: the void,” he continued. “Even in the midst of manifesting our wildest desires and material gains, it still ain’t enough. You need more: truth, love, happiness, freedom.”

In addition to releasing the single, Mario stopped by Hot 97 for an interview with Ebro In The Morning. During their convo he talks about his Mom, failed relationships, new music, and compares himself to Chris Brown, Migos and Drake.

Hear the single, and watch his interview below.

21 R&B Videos from the 2000s To Get You Ready for Spring Love!

Ah, spring! The season where the weather is nice, the flowers start to bloom, and R&B songs reign supreme!

As the weather finally went from drab to fab in the blink of an eye, I couldn’t help but play one of my favorite songs dedicated to the spring: Stevie B’s 1988 hit-single “Spring Love”.  Now, in the midst of me bobbin’ my head while the wind blew through and hit my bad hair day chia pet hair, I realized that this is the season that is the precursor to the official choose up season (word to Eric B.). It is in the spring that you engage in the drafting to the choose up season…if you will. It is with spring that you start laying down the good talk game to secure your spot for the playoff season if you’re in the market to be traded or do the trading.

Of course though, we all know that R&B is literally the genre of love (and heartache, but we’ll save that for another list), so it was only right that we delivered a list of R&B songs/videos from the 2000s to get you ready for spring love! What better way to let the one you’re checkin’ for know that they’ve caught your eye then to play them a track from one of the best eras (I’m not here to let you debate me, so don’t try) of music ever made?

Jump into our list of “21 R&B Videos from The 2000’s to Get You Ready for Spring Love” below!

Mario Unveils ‘Never 2 Late’ Album Cover, New Release Date

mario never 2 late

It’s been six years since the release of Mario‘s last album D.N.A. (2009), and now the R&B singer is finally ready to return with his anticipated fifth studio album, Never 2 Late.

The project will be his first as an independent artist and is now slated to be released on December 4.

Mario has been working on the album with platinum hitmaker Scott Storch, among others, and the LP’s lead single “Forever” featuring Rick Ross was released online last month. Hear it here.

New Music: Mario feat. Rick Ross – Forever

Early this year, Mario released the new single “Fireball,” which was a sort of comeback, buzz track to announce his forthcoming album, and first as an independent artist.

In June, producer Scott Storch revealed that he had signed Mario to his burgeoning new label, and they were working on his new album together.  Today, we get to hear the first taste of their work with the brand new single “Forever” featuring Rick Ross.

The track feels very much like the sound we’ve come to know Mario for most recently, R&B strings with pop synths, accompanied by some heavy percussion. He’s not letting go of that, and he’s not letting go of his lady, as he sings about wanting an everlasting love.

“I want this forever, I want you forever,” he sings on the chorus, adding: “Stay here with me, baby / I just want to love you till you scream.”

Mario’s first album in six years is titled Never 2 Late, and it is scheduled to be released on November 27.

Take a listen to his new single below:
