Pharrell Interviews Usher for ‘Artist TLK’ Series

Amongst his many ventures and positions, Pharrell Williams also has an online interview series titled ‘Artist TLK’ (standing for Talk), in which he himself interviews other prolific artists.

For his latest episode, the Neptunes hitmaker sits down with none other than Usher Raymond. During their intimate chat, the two friends exchange an honest convo about Usher’s beginnings in the church, meeting L.A. Reid and Diddy, the audition and first song he sang for L.A. (Boyz II Men’s “End Of The Road”), the importance of keeping R&B ballads alive, mentoring Justin Bieber, if he regrets doing something as an artist, his secret of success and much more.

Leah LaBelle brings her funky, throwback-inspired single “Lolita,” to life with the new playful, summery visual. The protégé of Pharrell and Jermaine Dupri seduces the neighborhood boys, strutting her stuff, and teasing her hot bod as she waters the flowers, poses at a car wash and dances in the street in the Diane Martel-directed video.

Leah is currently working on her debut album, which is due out later this year via i am OTHER/So So Def/Epic Records. Watch the fun-filled video below:

JoJo Performs Mini Concert, Duets with Leah LaBelle on John Legend Cover

jojo-leahJoJo released her new mixtape “Agape” at the end of last year, and her large fan base have been eager for more from the singer. As she preps for more show dates and possibly a mini tour, JoJo offered her fans across the globe a chance to see her perform in the most intimate of settings. The 21-year old performed a mini-concert from her keyboardist’s living room and broadcast it live online via Stageit.

She invited some of her musician friends/collaborators to join her, including Leah LaBelle and Austin Brown, and jammed for a 50-minute acoustic set. Viewers donated money and in exchange they were treated to past and present hits including “Leave (Get Out),” “Demonstrate,” “Andre” (which she revealed the music video is coming soon) and “Marvin’s Room,” which she credits for changing the course of her career.

She also threw in a cover of Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want to Wait,” debuted the full version of “Thinking Out Loud,” and dueted with her BFF Leah on John Legend’s “Ordinary People” (Part 3).

“While I’ve been in this limbo, your support has literally kept me alive,” a grateful JoJo told her fans before closing with “Too Little, Too Late.” “I can’t wait to explain everything to you. It’s gonna blow your fu**ing mind when you hear what’s going on.”

Leah Labelle and RaVaughn Brown are two of R&B’s young singers on the rise. Both of these ladies have been in L.A. for Grammy week, and in the midst of enjoying all the pre-Grammy parties, they both hit the stage at the BET Music Matters Grammy Showcase.

Many of their peers in the industry, such as L.A. Reid, Ne-Yo, Babyface, Jermaine Dupri, and more were there to support.

Essence Magazine Honors Solange Knowles at ‘Black Women In Music’ Event

Grammy week is in full swing, and the stars were out Wednesday night. Essence Magazine held their 4th annual ‘Black Women In Music’ event at Greystone Manor Supperclub in West Hollywood. The party honored Solange Knowles and rising British songbird Lianne La Havas as “Breakthrough Artist.”

Many of R&B’s leading ladies and some newcomers were in attendance including Tamia, Jill Scott, Estelle, Kelis, Dawn Richard, Leah LaBelle, and Bridget Kelly. Solange performed some new material off her acclaimed EP ‘True,’ and was joined onstage by her collaborator Devonté “Dev” Hynes and Earth Wind & Fire’s Verdine White.

But it wasn’t just a ladies night as some of their male peers celebrated the special event as well, including Tank, Bilal, Mario and Eric Benét. Check out HipHollywoods video recap above, photos below, and additionally some footage of Solange performing a cover of Selena’s “I Could Fall In Love.”

Rising soulful songstress Leah Labelle recently hit the stage at the 2012 Soul Train Awards, performing the late Teena Marie’s “Square Biz,” and Twitter went ablaze. Being introduced to us from the third season of American Idol, her career has been shaping up well, and with the help of Pharrell and Jermaine Dupri it’s very promising that Labelle will be one to look out for in 2013.
