Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds Honored on the Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’

On Thursday, R&B legend Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds was honored with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The ten-time Grammy Award winner was joined by friends and collaborators such as Usher, Diddy, L.A. Reid, Toni Braxton, Stevie Wonder and more, who came out to help celebrate the joyous moment with their pal.

“Everybody has a song or that moment when Kenny, or Babyface, really set the stage for what cool was,” praised Usher at the gathering which drew a huge crowd. ” Whip Appeal was my moment.”

L.A. Reid, who moved to Los Angeles with the man of the hour to pursue a career in music, reminisced about the good old days, joking that he felt shared ownership of the plaque.

“I hope you’ll understand it when I say this, but it feels like it’s mine as well,” said Reid. “Kenny and I moved to L.A. probably around 1983 or ’84, not far from here, and we weren’t doing that well, if you know what I mean, and so I’m proud because he’s come so far.”

Slow Jam of the Day: The Deele – Two Occasions

With starting this new series, there is no way I could pass this up and had to feature it asap. The Deele, for those that don’t know, was the original group of hitmaker Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and music executive LA Reid, founded in 1981, along with Carlos “Satin” Greene, Darnell “Dee” Bristol, Stanley “Stick” Burke and Kevin “Kayo” Roberson.

The sextet released their debut album, Street Beat in 1983, and the following year, a single from the album, “Body Talk” became their first hit, reaching No. 3 on the R&B chart and No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Guitarist/keyboardist Stanley “Stick” Burke left the band prior to the recording of a follow-up album. Recorded as a quintet, their sophomore LP, Material Thangz was released in 1985, but it did not see the success of their debut.

The band reached the apex of their career in 1987 with the release of their third album, Eyes of a Stranger, which produced two top-10 R&B singles, “Shoot ‘Em Up Movies” and perhaps their best-known song, “Two Occasions.”

“Two Occasions” was the second single released off the album. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 4 on the Hot R&B and No. 21 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Following this LP Edmonds and Reid left the group to pursue production work and other ventures.

The impressive talents of X Factor USA winner Melanie Amaro officially have a home. Show judge and music industry veteran L.A. Reid cut a deal with X Factor creator/producer Simon Cowell to nurture and launch Melanie’s career. Amaro has signed to Reid’s newly revamped Epic label (which is under Sony Music), the deal surrounds the largest prize in television history, which includes a $5 million record contract and a Pepsi Super Bowl commercial.

“I joined The X Factor to be able to discover undeniable talent such as Melanie,” said Reid. “I believe we have only scratched the surface on her inevitable journey to super-stardom.”

Melanie’s X Factor mentor Simon Cowell stated, “We all agreed that Epic would be the right fit for Melanie. L.A. made it clear that he wanted the opportunity to work with her and with his track record, you can’t say no to that.”

In her own statement Melanie expressed, “I am so excited to start recording my debut album under the guidance of L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell. This is a dream come true for me.”
