New Music: K’LA – “Everday People” (Mixtape)

You should be familiar with the name K’La by now, maybe you first heard her on “Blame” with Nas, or previously with “All Your Love.” If not, she is a Gary, Indiana native, currently signed to Island Def Jam, working on her debut album. While, she has caught most of our attention for her singing, she is actually a singer/rapper, and to introduce or re-introduce her two sides she released the mixtape “Everyday People.”

It actually dropped earlier this month, but we thought it was an all rap project. Turns out, it’s about half/half, with the R&B-ish songs starting around track 9. So, if you know her already and haven’t check this out, or are hearing about her for the first time, stream and download below:

SOB’s infamous “Sol Village” showcase will be returning on Wednesday, January 16, presented by our friends at N2S and YKIGS, and hosted by Eric Roberson. This month’s hand-picked artists include, K’LA, India Shawn, Jade Alston, Brianna Colette, Nikko Sherard & CharlieRED.

Over its 10 years, ‘Sol Village’ has featured artists such as John Legend, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Raphael Saadiq, Common, Floetry, Dwele and more recently Luke James, Bridget Kelly, Laurianna Mae, Allen Stone and Emily King to name a few. It has served as a cultural breeding ground from which young acts have broken into the next level of their careers.

Def Jam’s K’La drops a new gem, borrowing label mate Frank Ocean’s “Pink Matter” instrumental, for “Sweetest Poison.” The subtle, mournful strings pair incredibly with her soft, beautiful vocal. Following, the Nas assisted “Blame,” K airs some dirty laundry as she coos the tale of her heartbreaker ways. The Gary, Indiana native even drops a spoken word verse at the end. Backed with a heavy bassline and some hard hitting drums the singer/rapper coos her troubled feelings caused from her dishonest man. Just like every female! R&B new comer K’La is back with another song to capture our hearts entitled “I Ain’t Strugglin”. Take a listen as she lends her vocals over a ‘Boom Bap’ esq instrumental expressing not needing much anymore, and to appreciate what you have when you have it.
