Bryson Tiller ‘Sets It Off’ at Radio City Music Hall

The velvet seats of NYC’s famed Radio City Music Hall were mostly filled by groups of young women, though a few couples are sprinkled throughout the multi-leveled theater. The audience buzzed in anticipation as they waited for the night’s headliner, singer/rapper Bryson Tiller, to appear. When the lights finally dim, the crowd collectively shrieked.

“Rain On Me,” the SWV-sampled intro to Tiller’s sophomore album, True To Self, plays while clouds of smoke enveloped the stage. A DJ pumps up the crowd before the night’s main attraction, Tiller himself, steps onto the stage in MC mode. He starts with the rap-driven “Self-Made,” and when he pauses to take a breath, the crowd screams. “New York City what’s up,” Tiller asks as colorful lights shift around him. “Welcome to the Set It Off Tour, my name is Bryson Tiller.”

As Tiller transitioned into R&B with offerings from his highly popular debut album TRAPSOUL, as well as the chart-topping True To Self, you can’t help but notice the striking similarity between his live vocals and his recordings. On stage, whether rapping or singing, he sounds nearly identical to the Bryson Tiller you hear on the radio. This is the most refreshing aspect of Tiller’s show, in that he doesn’t rely on stage theatrics to move the crowd. He does, however, make sure to cater to the local audience.

New Video: Bryson Tiller – Run Me Dry

Bryson Tiller has finally unveiled a new visual off his sophomore album True To Self.

Following “Somethin Tells Me,” which dropped in May, Pen Griffey goes back in front of the lens for the melodic “Run Me Dry.”

The cinematic video opens in a small motel room, with neon lighting shining through split shades, as Tiller glares into a static-filled television set. Once he is joined by a beautiful model wearing a satin slip, the singer/rapper invites the lady that has been running through his mind to join him in the bedroom.

“You should come check on me / Talk dirty and caress on me,” he sings. “F**k it, might as well get undressed for me / Love how you get that pu**y wet for me.”

But, it’s not all good, as the woman has been draining not only his bank account but his stress level is at an all-time high. “I lost all respect for you / Baby, it’s my turn to flex on you,” he sings later.

After leaving the room, Tiller appears at the Los Angeles River and a warehouse with girls on bikes. Rain falls around him, and then he ends up back in his room alone, staring at the television again.

Bryson is currently wrapping up the first leg of his “Set It Off Tour” with supporting acts H.E.R. and Metro Boomin. Next month, he is heading out on the U.K. and European leg of the tour with SZA.

Stream the ‘Insecure’ Season 2 Soundtrack featuring SZA, Bryson Tiller, Jazmine Sullivan & More!

Insecure Season 2

The second season of HBO’s “Insecure” may have come to an end last night, but the show lives on with its excellently curated soundtrack.

The hit series’ compilation comes with a collection of new and old tracks from a variety of stars, including SZA, Bryson Tiller, Jazmine Sullivan, GoldLink, Leikeli47, Lion Babe, Jorja Smith, NAO and the show’s star/creator Issa Rae.

SZA’s “Quicksand,” one of the standout selections from the project, was released earlier this week to much acclaim.

“Insecure’s” music supervisor Kier Lehman recently spoke with Business Insider about the project, including SZA’s inclusion. “We get advance music from all the labels, but of course we have this special relationship with RCA,” explained Lehman. “They were feeding us a lot of their upcoming releases early, in the hopes that we could work that into the show. The SZA stuff we got from them early, and obviously it fit so well with the show that we were able to use two songs in the first two episodes.”

According to Lehman, Rae has also been “very, very involved” in the music selection process. “She comes in with songs that she already has in mind for certain themes,” added Lehman. “She will let me know if there’s something that’s been cut in and she wants to see some other options. And I’ll pull a few things, and then present them to her, and from there she’ll make her final selection. It all goes through her, and it all comes from her really. She’s giving the direction, and I’m here to provide her with the choices that I think would be good for the show.”

Overall, Lehman described the sound of the show as “super current, underground, alternative, sometimes R&B, hip-hop. And, fresh.” Stream the soundtrack below.

Bryson Tiller Talks “Wild Thoughts,” ‘True To Self,’ Drake, JAY-Z & More

Bryson Tiller Tim Westwood

Bryson Tiller traveled across the pond last week for a performance at the annual Wireless Festival on Friday night.

Prior to his set, the R&B star sat down with UK radio legend Tim Westwood for an off-camera interview. The often reclusive artist addressed his decision to not do many video interviews, avoiding the added attention from females now that he is a celebrity, and how success affected the relationship with the mother of his child.

Tiller spoke briefly about his feature and the success of “Wild Thoughts,” he talked about being flattered by other artists doing the ‘TrapSoul’ sound, and his early influences. When asked about it, Bryson said he loves JAY-Z’s new album 4:44, but he revealed that he hasn’t even heard all of Jay’s past albums, and he never used to listen to hip hop at all. The first rap artist that he got into was Lil Wayne.

Speaking about rap artists, Pen Griffey said he wants to get back in the studio with Travis Scott. During another off-camera interview on Capital Xtra, he discussed why his previously-teased collaborations with Drake haven’t been released yet. “I sent him a few songs and he sent me a few songs. We just gotta see what happens,” he said. “I don’t ever want to rush a song with anybody. I just want to put out the right song or the right project … Whatever it may be, I don’t want to rush it.”

Pen Griffey appears in a window looking down at the street as he explicitly sings to a new love interest. “I hear that pu**y for the takin’ / I heard it got these other ni**as goin’ crazy / Yea I treat you like a lady,” sings Tiller.

“Wild Thoughts” follows the video for “I’m the One,” which helped the Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, and Quavo single become Khaled’s first No. 1 on the Hot 100.
