PressPlay: 25 R&B Videos To Kick Off Summer

R&B Videos Summer

Summer is here and in case you were wondering, I’m just as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. Though each season holds its own weight in my book, there’s just something about summer that can make anyone feel their best and want to shine every chance they can. While everyone has their different reasons for feeling so good when summer creeps around, we here at ThisIsRnB will always give some of the credit to our playlist of summer R&B songs for that overwhelming emotion that the season brings out of us.

Although today’s R&B artists can still deliver a solid feel good sound for summer (i.e. DJ Khaled’s Rihanna and Bryson Tiller-assisted “Wild Thoughts“), there’s no denying that the majority of the top summer vibes came from the ’90s and early 2000s. Likewise, those same artists were all about making videos to match that same vibe and as a result, turned each summer into the biggest party that we would experience all year-long. So as an ode to those tracks and inspiration to make the next few months the best of your year, we decided to set you up with a dope list of R&B videos that are sure to set your summer off proper.

Excited about letting the top back, pulling out the shawt shawts, and getting tipsy on the rooftop? Jump into these 25 nostalgic summer videos to hype you up for your first day out (no Gucci) this season.

Trailer: Adina Howard 20: A Story of Sexual Liberation (Documentary)

Adina Howard 20

In 1995, Adina Howard made waves in the world of music with her breakout hit single “Freak Like Me.” Never before had a solo R&B female artist made such a bold and controlling stance sexually through song. Along with becoming one of the highest selling singles and most played music videos on MTV and BET in 1995, Howard’s performance allowed young women of color and future recording artist to express their sexuality without shame.

“Adina Howard 20: A Story of Sexual Liberation” shares Adina’s story through her own words as well as the impact that she made during the 1990s and thereafter through the thoughts of fellow entertainers, educators, feminists, family and fans.

The documentary film gives an intellectual look into the inside of the highs and lows of the life a platinum selling artist, whose work has made a lasting impact despite the polarizing feelings towards her.

Adina speaks on her relationship with Tupac Shakur, the banning of her music video from BET, landing a cameo role in the movie Waiting to Exhale, her encounter with legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, working with Hollywood giants Jackie Chan and Jamie Foxx and the sudden halt to her stardom due to her comments about record exec Sylvia Rhone.

Throwback Tuesday: Adina Howard – “Freak Like Me”

“I want a freak in the morning, a freak in the evening just like me!”

“Freak like Me” was the debut single from R&B singer Adina Howard. It was released in 1995 as the lead single from her debut album Do You Wanna Ride? The song, like Howard’s image can be best described as very sexual. The single reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA.

The song and Adina Howard’s hypersexual image are considered groundbreaking in the U.S. R&B/Hip Hop scene. The song portrayed a female singer as being aggressive rather than coy in her sexuality, but in a manner that was feminine unlike the female artists of before who dressed in men’s apparel to express their aggressive image. This new, hyper-sexual image paved the way for upcoming R&B/Hip Hop female artists at the time. It also allowed other female artists to feel comfortable releasing explicit lyrical content.

The song’s chorus is a lyrical interpolation of the verses found in Bootsy Collins’ “I’d Rather Be with You”. While the lyrics in “Freak like Me” are different from Bootsy’s song, they are sung in identical melody. The song’s drum beat is sampled from Sly & the Family Stone’s “Sing a Simple Song.”

The video is classic ’90s style from the back up dancers to the house party. Enjoy the video above!
