August Alsina‘s relationship with his mother has been turbulent over the years. It’s a topic that he often touched on through his music, but one that was still an on-going situation.

We haven’t heard the R&B star talk about it lately, but on Saturday night, fans that were attending Alsina’s “Don’t Matter Tour” show in Houston, TX witnessed a very special moment between the two.

During his set at the House of Blues, August and his mother (Sheila Blair) shared their heartfelt, emotional reunion with the audience. While performing his song “Make It Home,” August attempted to fight back uncontrollable tears as he embraced his mother over cheers from the crowd.

Knelling down in front of her, they hugged while he sang lyrics from the Testimony song.

Speaking about their reunion afterward, Sheila Blair wrote on Instagram: “In my suffering for almost 2 years not completely understanding what God was doing in my life I thank God for the pain that I had to endure to get me to a place of finding rest in him. As God wanted my undivided attention from taking Melvin to division between me and August. I’m so glad I surrendered this time apart has made us see the value of love and family.”

In a 2015 interview August opened up about the strained relationship with his mother, stating:

“I don’t expect people to really understand the situation with my mom and her kids. Sometimes we go years, months without talking to her. I applaud my mom for doing all that she has done for us as a parent, but I think that sometimes the mother side gets pushed to the side. I just imagine me having a kid and my kid being an artist and in a song my child sings – I try to buy my mama love she don’t appreciate me.”

He continued, “My reaction isn’t to go online to explain myself to the world. My reaction would be — let me see what’s wrong with my child because I’m the parent and you’re the child. I feel like a regular person to my mom, not her son.”

August’s mother previously responded on social media, writing: “So I listened to the interview. I was so sadden [sic] by the lies or the road August chose to promote the album. It’s always three sides to the story. How could you call and check on someone that stop talking to you since April? August didn’t call me for Mother’s Day, birthday in July. Passed out, rushed to the hospital in September, didn’t hear from him. It’s so sad that this boy is crying out for help, and his whole team is missing it.”

It’s great to see August and his mother reunite!
