Listen: Newcomer Ella Mai Releases Buzz-Worthy New EP ‘TIME’

By

Last month, we were introduced to emerging singer-songwriter Ella Mai with the release of her catchy DJ Mustard-produced single “She Don’t” featuring Ty Dolla $ign.

The U.K. native is the latest signee to Mustard’s 10 Summers Records, and is now climbing up our must-watch list with the release of her new EP ‘TIME.’  Her first single was clearly impressive, the undeniable L.A. styled beat was attention grabbing, but it was Mai’s vocal tone that stood out. Now giving us a deeper look into her artistry, the 6-track project is rooted in her past emotions over love and relationships. If nothing else, her opening line on the first track sets the mood as she sings, “Mama said, never love a n*gga more than he love me.”

Break-up and resentment feelings carry throughout the project, but the music keeps the lyrics with an uplifting feel opposed to more sorrow. On the closing track “A Thousand Times,” Ella rides the mid-tempo groove wishing her ex eventually feels the same pain she has, as she calls it quits singing: “Can’t believe you got me out here looking stupid / I’m the one that held you down when you were losing / Now you got me feeling like shooting cupid, ’cause you did me wrong.”

Talking about the project Ella states, “I’m big on self-confidence. Everyone goes through that heart-breaking process, ‘cause we’re human and we have emotions. But I think the bounce-back is most important.”
