Throwback Thursday: Dru Hill – “Tell Me”

By

Dru Hill is a R&B group most popular during the late ’90s, whose repertoire included R&B, soul, and gospel music. Founded in Baltimore, Maryland, the group has been active since 1992. The original group line up consisted of Nokio, Sisqo, Jazz, and Woody. New member Tao was added to the group once Woody departed.

“Tell Me” was the debut single by Dru Hill from their eponymous first album. The song peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the R&B chart. The music video, directed by Terry Heller, debuted the classic “Tell Me Jump Dance” that fans have been doing since the song debuted. The song was also featured on the soundtrack of the film Eddie.

It is here that we were introduced to the soulful vocal styling of the group as well as the soulful vocals of Jazz and Sisqo as they took lead, Nokio and Woody sung background. With later Dru Hill releases, fans were able to take notice of Jazz’s incredible vocal range, Woody’s soulful leading vocals (“5 Steps”), and Nokio’s work in vocal arrangement and composition. Enjoy the video above!
