Poll: Wait, Does Drake Have the R&B Record of the Year?

Drake-R&B-Record

It seems crazy but at the same time it doesn’t.  Consistently, Drake has produced some of the most rhythmically, melodic crossover Hip-Hop/R&B records of the past 4 years. Starting for many with the incessantly catchy “Best I Ever Had,” off his third mixtape ‘So Far Gone.’  Now, fresh off the release of his third album ‘Nothing Was The Same,’ few will argue that Drake has the Hip-Hop song of the year, with his anthemic “Started From The Bottom.”

But, is it possible he just very well might have the R&B record of the year, as well?? While we enter the 4th quarter, and begin considering the years best categories, this has become a topic of discussion on these streets.  In early August, Drake released the second single “Hold On, We’re Going Home“, an instantly catchy tune co-produced by his partner Noah “40” Shebib, and a virtually unknown Majid Jordan.  The song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, but has topped the R&B/Hip-Hop charts for numerous weeks. The record immediately grabs you with its old school drums, and retro background vocals, but Drake pulls you in deeper with his uncanny knack for delivering emotion, as he professes the addictive allure of his latest love.

It’s the combination of the retro elements, and still progressive nature of the record as a whole, that has turned this track into a favorite amongst many fans and fellow artists alike. Not since Lauryn Hill has an artist successfully tapped the ability to deliver such greatness in two genres at the same time as Drake is currently.  While some will want to argue the record is not “real” R&B, they will need to realize we are not in a traditional era anymore, and adaptive progression by influence is what will keep things going.

Now you tell us … Could Drake have the R&B Record of the Year with “Hold On, We’re Going Home”?? Vote in our poll below:
