For the second part of Studio 43’s intimate series ‘Portrait’ with Kelly Rowland, the R&B star discusses her hit single, “Dirty Laundry,” and how she was initially reluctant to release the record because of how personal it is. But, with the advice of her manager who urged her to share such vulnerability and inspire people with similar trials and tribulations, she released the record to rave reviews from her fans.

Though she admits the record is sometimes hard to perform (she recalls her tour stop in Washington, D.C. where she broke down in tears while performing the song), Kelly is glad she told her story and credits The-Dream for his genius in transforming it into such a moving musical experience.

To close the piece, Kenny Burns asks Kelly, “where do you see it [your career] going?” Quoting Jay-Z from his recent Samsung commercial, Kelly responds, “We make the rules,” making it clear that the transition from her iconic history with Destiny’s Child is complete and she is ushering in a new phase for herself that has no limits.
