Janelle Monae recently shot her first ever Essence magazine cover. HipHollywood was on set to capture some behind-the-scenes footage and first looks at the shoot and the outfits that she wore. The eclectic singer branched off from her normal black and white uniform, and experimented with pieces that fit in with her love of the future.

“Essence knows that I have a strong love for science fiction and the future,” explained Monae. “We wanted to pick locations and we wanted to pick pieces that represented the future and what that felt like without over stating.”

While she wore a mix of vintage and couture looks by high-end designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel, Janelle addressed her fashion approach. “By wearing black and white I have taken some risks, because of course a lot of people do want to see [me] wear this, or what does she look like in this or in that, but I think I do things on my own time.”

Her fans will be happy to know her new album ‘Electric Lady‘ is coming soon and she revealed that this album is very deep and personal. “I really had to dig deep when I was recording the Electric Lady, and you guys will get an opportunity to hear and feel a different side of Janelle Monae, or just a more revealing side, and it was difficult for me because I am a private person.”

In regards to her feature in Essence and inspiring young woman, “I just hope to make our generation proud, and by being on essence i prary that other young girls are inspiration, i feel vey blessed, i feel very honored and im exicted for you guys to read the story.” Peep the video below:
