Chris Brown’s “Fortune” Lands at No. 1 on Billboard Chart

The numbers are in and as expected Chris Brown tops the Billboard 200 chart this week with the release of his fifth album Fortune. The follow-up to his Grammy winning 2011 release F.A.M.E., follows suit giving Brown his second #1 debut. With 134,000+ copies sold, it underwhelmed from his previous set which debuted by more than double with 270,000.

Does this show a lack of decreased interest in Brown? Most likely not, he obtained his first UK No. 1 with Fortune as well, but hasn’t been able to obtain a Top 5 single off the album, and received lukewarm reviews from critics.

Where the album follows its predecessor in style and sound, highlighting Brown’s diversity and talent in multiple genres, it lacks in originality, sustainability and memorability. Originally intended to be the double-disk accompaniment to F.A.M.E. much of it feels like a sibling trying to emulate its older brothers achievements.

This following period could and hopefully will be a space for continued growth and musical maturity for Chris. Leading into the next phrase of his career.
