Mary J. Blige kicked off Labor Day weekend on a high note, performing a mini-concert at Rumsey Playfield in New York’s Central Park. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul closed out “Good Morning America’s” Summer Concert Series with past and present hits, including The Help theme song “The Living Proof,” “Just Fine,” “Family Affair,” and her latest single “25/8” off her upcoming album My Life II: The Journey Continues, due in November.

She chatted briefly about her new music, film projects, fragrance, and philanthropic efforts.

“The first My Life was a very important record because it came from a very dark place where we all needed a lot of help,” explained Mary. “Right now, we still need help with each other, but our journey continues because we learn how to weather the storm. As long as we’re living, the journey must continue.”

She also gushed about working with Hollywood A-listers like Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Russell Brand on the ’80s musical Rock of Ages. “I had the time of my life,” she said. “Tom Cruise, he blew me away. He’s a rock ‘n’ roll star. He can sing his face off. He’s killin’ it. You’re gonna be surprised.”
