FRANK OCEAN TALKS WRITING & CLEARING SAMPLES FOR HIS ALBUM RELEASE

The elusive Francis Ocean did his second on-camera interview ever with MTV News back in April, and the reality-show television network finally released it. Frank talks about his songwriting “I take my time, some songs come quick, ‘Swim Good’ came quick, I wrote that in like half an hour, ‘American Wedding’ took me a week and a half, it really just depends what the story is“. The Odd Future affiliate went on to say that “Melody is easy, cuz melody is always bad when you over-think it, always, everytime“.

Moving on to the samples of the forthcoming album release of his “nostalgia, ULTRA” mixtape, “The Eagles sample has no chance in hell of being cleared,” Ocean said. “Coldplay sample, possibly. I hear ‘possibly’ from people who say they know. MGMT, those guys seem chill. I heard they heard the record and they liked it a lot, so hopefully that can go some way.”

In related news Rap-Up reported that his upcoming Def Jam release will be more like an EP. It will be titled “nostalgia, LITE,” and feature about 7 tracks. The songs expected to make the cut are “Swim Good,” “Songs for Women,” “We All Try,” as well as the first single “Novacane.” At least two new songs, “Acura Integrul” and “Whip Appeal,” will be included. The set is currently scheduled for a July 26th release.

BEYONCE EXPERIMENTED ‘WITH EVERYTHING’ ON “4″ SAYS ENGINEER

Billboard recently spoke with Beyonce’s go-to engineer for an exclusive interview. During their chat the Toronto native, Jordan “DJ Swivel” Young spoke about his unlikely road to working on one of the most anticipated albums of 2011, B’s “4″ (due June 28).

I was cleaning toilets, ordering food, doing maintenance around the studio when I first started,” Young says, recalling his internship days. “But it never felt like a day of work. That’s when I knew I’d found my calling.”

Young dishes on 120-hour work weeks, technology and recording studios. He notes with enthusiasm that it’s an honor to record “the greatest singer of our generation.”

VIDEO: MAXWELL PERFORMS ON VH1 ‘STORYTELLERS’

Last night VH1 aired Maxwell’s anticipated ‘Storytellers’ show. The intimate concert was held at Metropolis Studios in New York City in front of a 150 member audience. The soulful crooner opened his set with my favorite “Ascension” and continued on through many of his classics such as “Bad Habits,” “Downdeep,” “Whenever, Wherever, Whatever,” “Sumthin Sumthin,” “Fistful of Tears” and closed the night with “Pretty Wings”.

‘Storytellers’ has been around for 15 years, and it’s been 15 years since I put out my first album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite,” the humble crooner told the crowd. “You have this dream as a kid, and the next thing you know you’re at ‘VH1 Storytellers’ and the crowd is singing along to your songs. It’s a blessing.”

The follow-up to BLACKsummers’night is due later this year, but for now, enjoy the sweet sounds of Maxwell below.
